Travel Smarter with Diamond Bar Travel - A Trip to Japan

Hello! My name is Caroline Thurston and I am a Travel Agent.

I became a Travel Agent in order to travel and see all the wonders and fascinating things that this world has to offer. Every day, I do research - whether it’s for a client or just for myself to learn something about a country or place that I’d always wanted to learn about. My travel group also has many destination trainings available, and I’ve learned things about places I didn’t even know I wanted to go to - but I do now! My bucket list has grown exponentially!

I started my travel agency when I lost my job almost 3 years ago. I quickly realized that I would need things a traditional job offers that owning your own business doesn’t or at least can’t right away. So, I work a regular 9-5 job, and I run my business on my breaks and in the evenings and weekends. It’s difficult, but I have to say - I LOVE IT.

My goal is to work my day job for the next 10 years or so, and then retire, and run my business full time. And while I’m not waiting to travel, I have only so much time off from my job - and my husband (and favorite travel partner) only has so much time off - so…while I can’t travel as extensively as some of my fellow travel agents, we do what we can with the time we have. Mike and I have trips planned soon to Alaska, the UK, and possibly Mexico or Costa Rica. Along with these trips, we will have trips domestically - back home to Minnesota, Idaho and to New York to see family.

This brings me to my new Blog - “Travel Smarter with Diamond Bar Travel.”  I will be giving you information I find out about trips I’m planning for my clients, and I will be telling you all about our travels and things I’ve learned either from our travels or from my research. I will also be opening an Amazon Associates store to share great travel and life products I find or hear about along the way - stay tuned and watch for that coming soon!

To kick off this Blog, I recently booked a client on a trip to Japan. It was fascinating to look into the various accommodations (Ryokans are particularly fascinating to me) and modes of transportation (bullet trains anyone?). It was also interesting to learn some of the different things about their culture and how it differs from ours in the large (known) ways and the small (unknown) ways. I do a lot of research so that I can send my clients on their vacations with as much knowledge as possible.

So, in order to help people Travel Smarter - here are some of things I think everyone should know before they go to Japan!

5 Things Everyone Should Already Know About Traveling in Japan

Japan is Extremely Safe! Japan is consistently ranked as one of the safest countries in the world. Crime rates are low, and even in major cities, it’s common to see people leaving their belongings unattended at cafés or on public transportation. That said, it’s always wise to be aware of your surroundings, just like anywhere else.

Public Transportation is Punctual & Efficient. Japan’s trains and buses run like clockwork. If a train is scheduled to leave at 10:03 AM, you can bet it will leave exactly on time. The country’s famous Shinkansen (bullet trains) can reach speeds of over 200 mph, making long-distance travel fast and efficient. Be sure to arrive at your platform early—because they won’t wait for you!

Cherry Blossom Season is Spectacular (and Crowded). One of the most famous times to visit Japan is during sakura (cherry blossom) season in the spring. Parks and gardens are filled with stunning pink blooms, but this also means higher prices and larger crowds. If you're planning a spring trip, book your accommodations early!

Japanese Culture is Deeply Respectful. Manners and politeness are essential in Japan. Bowing is a common greeting, removing your shoes before entering homes and certain restaurants is expected, and being loud in public spaces (like trains) is frowned upon. Learning a few basic Japanese phrases, such as "Arigato" (thank you) and "Sumimasen" (excuse me), will go a long way!

Japan is a Food Lover’s Paradise. From sushi and ramen to tempura and wagyu beef, Japan offers some of the best cuisine in the world. Even convenience store food is surprisingly good! Keep in mind that many traditional restaurants specialize in just one type of dish—so don’t expect to find a place serving sushi, ramen, and tempura all under one roof.

5 Unusual Things to Know About Traveling in Japan

Cash is Still King. Despite Japan’s technological advancements, cash is still widely preferred. Many small shops, local restaurants, and even some train stations do not accept credit cards. Always carry yen with you, and use 7-Eleven ATMs, which are the most reliable for international withdrawals.

No Tipping – It Can Be Rude! Unlike in the U.S., tipping is not part of Japanese culture. If you try to leave a tip, your waiter might refuse it or even chase you down to return the money. Instead, show appreciation with a polite bow and a heartfelt “Arigato gozaimasu” (thank you very much).

Slurping Your Noodles is Encouraged. In Japan, making noise while eating noodles isn’t rude—it’s a sign that you’re enjoying your meal! Slurping also helps cool down hot broth and enhances the flavors. So, if you’re eating ramen, soba, or udon, don’t be afraid to slurp away!

Train Etiquette is Serious Business. Japan’s trains are incredibly quiet because talking loudly is considered disrespectful. You’ll also notice priority seating for the elderly, pregnant women, and those with disabilities—always give up your seat if needed. And if you're traveling during rush hour, prepare for packed train cars!

Tattoos Can Limit Your Access to Public Baths & Onsens. Tattoos in Japan have historically been associated with the yakuza (organized crime groups), so many onsen (hot springs) and public bathhouses ban guests with tattoos. Some places allow small tattoos if they are covered, while others have become more lenient—so always check before you go!

Final Thoughts

Japan is a country full of wonder, and knowing both the expected and the unexpected will help you have an unforgettable experience. Whether you're marveling at ancient temples, exploring neon-lit streets, or indulging in world-class cuisine, a little cultural awareness goes a long way.

My clients are headed to Kyoto in April, and when they return I’ll do a follow up to see how their trip went and if there is anything they think other travellers should know before they go. What about you? Have you been to Japan? What were some of the things that surprised you or that you think people should know before they go? I’d love to hear from you in the comments!
